AI relies heavily on big data to function effectively, as machine learning algorithms require large datasets to identify patterns and improve accuracy. Businesses use big data analytics to inform marketing strategies, improve customer experiences, and optimize operations. However, the extensive collection and use of data raise ethical concerns related to consumer privacy, consent, and data security (Ferrell et al., 2022, p. 311).
Blockchain technology also plays a significant role in AI-enabled systems. Blockchain is a decentralized record-keeping technology that stores an immutable record of data in digital blocks over time (Ferrell et al., 2022, p. 311). While blockchain can enhance transparency and reduce certain risks, it does not eliminate ethical concerns entirely. Despite these advantages, the textbook notes that many consumers remain hesitant to rely solely on AI in medical contexts, particularly when medical needs are complex or highly individualized. One of the most significant concerns is algorithmic bias. Because AI systems learn from existing data, they can replicate and amplify biases present in historical datasets.
